The bullet cut shape is traditionally a step cut diamond used as matched pair to center stones.
They provide an economical way to add more diamond surface area across the finger than putting the same dollars into the center stone.

The name comes from the shape of a bullet. Their 3 sides have straight lines forming a part of a square with the fourth side pointy with a sharp edge. Certain versions could have cut corners on the 3 lines like an emerald cut.

A bullet shape can be made in a "brilliant cut" pattern or a "step cut" pattern and each pattern will serve a better purpose.  An emerald shape diamond is a step cut and so step cut bullet diamonds will better match the appearance of an emerald diamond.  A round diamond is a brilliant cut and brilliant cut bullets will look much better next to a round.
